The spring with its colors, with the awakening of nature invite you to discover the Monferrato and stay a week.
The hostel ”La sosta”(Ostello Foresteria "la sosta" via Roma 2 15020 Gabiano Monferrato (AL) Italy phone 39 0161 846174) overlooks the main square of the small village of Varengo in the township of Gabiano, close to Monferrato. Guests stay in the building that was once the Town Hall, and was then completely restored for the Winter Olympic games in 2006.
The hostel has got four bedrooms furnished in a practical way without compromising any of its comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.
Two double bedrooms with private bathroom
One double bedroom with wheelchair accessible bathroom (possibility to add two more beds)
One room with six beds (up to eight if you need) with sharing toilet facilities consisting in two showers and four bathrooms.
The hostel has also got a kitchen and a dining room where breakfast can be served if requested.
Our hostel is ideally situated for people who like spending their holiday for their relaxation, and being close to nature. It is also a perfect starting point for those who want to visit Monferrato with its castles, small villages, and its many cultural attractions.
The hostel is completely open in 2011 from 20th March to 30th November, though it is possible to arrange for stays during Winter as well.
Our guests will be able to sample the typical cuisine of Monferrato in the restaurants nearby.
WHAT TO DO and WHAT TO SEE
Monferrato is a charming area in Piemonte, offering many possibilities to people who love the countryside, sports, or cultural holidays, but Monferrato is still a undiscovered. Visitors come here to taste food and have a good glass of wine or to take a nice trip, but there are as yet only a few tourists who think of this area of Piemonte as a possible holiday destination.That is why we would like to make some suggestions to for those people who are still wondering why they should spend some days here.

- Abbey Santa Maria di Lucedio. Founded in 1123, the Abbey is considered one of the most wonderful examples of Cistercian architecture in Piemonte. It is open to the public for groups of 15 people and more, but you must book in advance. Every Sunday from the 1 May – 31 October – except August – there is the possibility to arrange organised tours, without booking and without any fixed number of visitors http://www.principatodilucedio.it/inglese/tradizione.html

- Abbey of Santa Fede in Cavagnolo. This church is situated 1 km from Cavagnolo. It is a very peaceful place that invites one to spirituality and meditation, and used to be a place where pilgrim stopped to rest. Today it is used for spiritual retreats.

- Abbey of Vezzolano in Aramengo. This is the most famous Romanesque monument in the area. According to a legend, the foundation of the abbey dates to the times of Charlemagne. Here he is believed to have been hunting, in 773, when three skeletons appeared to him from the tomb. He thus decided to build an abbey here dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Today, one of its many charms lies in the splendid isolation that characterises the church.

- Archaeological site of the Roman town of Industria in Monteu da Po. The town dates back to the 1st century B.C., and was founded near the former hamlet of Bodincomagus. Industria was a commercial and artistic centre, and was destroyed between the 5th and 6th centuries. Archaeologists discovered a sanctuary devoted to the Oriental gods Isis and Serapide at this site.

- Astronomical observatory in Odalengo Piccolo. It is open to the public from the 1 April, 9.30–23.00 pm

- Castle of Camino. This medieval castle is private, but it is possible to visit its park and rooms on special occasions. These visits are organised by the organisation that acts as the owners of the castle.

- Castle of Gabiano. This belongs to the family Cattaneo Adorno Giustiniani, dating back to 8th century. The castle overlooks the village of Gabiano, and nowadays houses the family winery. It is possible to visit the wine cellars and the park.

- Fortress of Verrua Savoia. Historically, this has been one of the most important European fortresses, and now houses many historical and cultural entertainments. It can be visited every Sunday between 15 March – 5 October.
